We all begin to develop signs of aging in the face in neck over time. Eventually fine lines, wrinkles, jowls and other signs of aging begin to form, and become more prominent as you get older. Fortunately, there are solutions to help you restore a more youthful appearance. Depending on your unique needs and goals, a facelift and/or a neck lift can help you turn back the clock and reverse these signs of aging.

Very few procedures can deliver the highly customized, comprehensive, long-term results accomplished by a facelift. Dr. Fugo can help you look decades younger after your procedure.

What Can a Facelift Address?

A facelift provides comprehensive facial rejuvenation results in the middle and lower regions of your face. Your procedure can address a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Nasolabial folds (lines extending from your nose to the corners of your mouth)
  • Marionette lines (lines extending from the corners of your mouth to your chin)
  • Deep creases across the face
  • Sagging facial skin and muscles
  • Sagging in the middle portion of your face
  • Fallen fat pockets and tissue
  • Jowls
  • Hollows underneath the eyes
  • Deep facial folds near the mouth
  • The appearance of a double chin
  • Banding in the neck region

While nonsurgical solutions such as dermal fillers do restore lost volume, quickly addressing mild to moderate signs of again, a facelift is sometimes necessary to address sagging tissue, thereby providing more comprehensive facial rejuvenation results.

Am I a Facelift Candidate?

Ideal facelift candidates:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure
  • Would like to correct signs of aging in the middle to lower facial region
  • Prefer customized, long-lasting results
  • Do not smoke, vape nor use any nicotine products, or are ready to permanently quit prior to surgery.

Keep in mind that a facelift focuses on the central and lower part of your face. If you are interested in reversing the signs of aging around your eyes or forehead, Dr. Fugo may recommend one of the following procedures to more effectively address your goals:

How will I prepare for my facelift and neck lift?

A facelift and neck lift with Dr. Fugo is major surgery, so you’ll need to prepare as you would for any surgery. This means we’ll have you stop taking any blood thinning medications, aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, and most herbal supplements for 10 days prior to your surgery. These can all cause increased bleeding. If you smoke, you’ll need to be completely nicotine free 6 weeks prior to and permanently after your surgery, as smoking constricts the blood vessels and can negatively impact your healing and long term results.

Much of your preparation should be for your initial recovery. All of this will be discussed in great detail by Dr. Fugo and his staff prior to your planned surgical procedure.

Your Facelift Procedure

Dr. Fugo understands that everyone is impacted by the aging process in different ways. In order to achieve beautiful, natural looking results, he will develop a customized treatment plan that complements your facial features and addresses the specific signs of aging you experience.

Depending on your unique needs and goals, Dr. Fugo may recommend one of the following facelift techniques:

  • Full facelift – This technique addresses the entire face, upper, middle and lower regions including your eyes and neck. It is the most comprehensive technique and delivers the most dramatic results.
  • Mid facelift – This technique focuses on signs of aging in the central and lower portion of your face, including your cheeks.

Your procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under light anesthesia. Depending on the technique used, incisions will be made either in your hairline, at the temples or behind the ears. Dr. Fugo always works to ensure your incisions are as discreet as possible.

Excess skin will be removed. Appropriate facial volume is restored while the deeper tissue and muscle layers are tightened to provide additional support. The remaining skin is redraped over the restored facial structures for a more youthful appearance.

Neck Lift

If your primary goal is to address signs of aging in the neck region, Dr. Fugo may recommend a neck lift. This can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with a facelift for enhanced results.

Your procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under light anesthesia. During your procedure, loose muscles in the neck region are tightened. In addition, loose skin is removed in order to address sagging and restore a more youthful jawline and neck appearance. If you have excess fat under your chin, Dr. Fugo will address this with your neck lift for enhanced results.

Recovery after a Facelift or Neck Lift

You will typically need about 3-4 days of rest and recovery after a facelift or neck lift. Most patients return to work and/or daily activities within 5-7 days. You may resume unrestricted activity and exercise at 14 days.

You’ll gradually experience results as swelling subside. It may take approximately 6-8 weeks before your final outcome is acheived.

Is recovery after a facelift painful?

Recovery after your procedure typically isn’t painful, but rather described as “uncomfortable”. Dr. Fugo repositions tissue and tightens underlying support musculature. He excises loose, sagging skin. This manifests as mild-moderate swelling. Bruising is rare, although possible. There will be some discomfort, but it is not sharp, acute pain. Your pain medication will keep you comfortable. After the first two or three days, your discomfort will begin to quickly decrease.

What are the risks with a facelift and neck lift?

The facelift is one of the original plastic surgeries, the first recorded facelift was performed in 1916. In the following century, millions of people around the world have had facelifts performed. They have proven to be safe and effective for reducing the signs of aging across our mid to lower face and neck.

These procedures with Dr. Fugo are considered major surgery. That means they include the risks associated with surgery: bleeding, infection, hematoma, and the like. Beyond those general risks of surgery, facelifts can create a temporary loss of sensation, most commonly limited to the earlobes and neck skin. The incision scars can thicken and widen, especially if recovery instructions are not followed. There can be hair loss at the incision sites within the hairline. These complications are rare, however, and facelifts and neck lifts are very satisfying procedures for most patients.

What will my scarring be like after a facelift and neck lift?

Scarring from facelift and neck lift surgery is designed to be well hidden in normal skin lines and creases of the hairline, beneath the chin and behind the ear.

How long will the results of my facelift and neck lift last?

As mentioned above, facelifts with Dr. Fugo can achieve significant rejuvenation for our patients, reversing their facial age by decades. You’ll need patience awaiting healing time and full results, as swelling can endure for weeks, but you’ll be pleased with the changes.

These results are permanent, but, unfortunately, they can’t stop the aging process. Your face will continue to age, but it won’t do so to the degree that merited you coming to us in the first place. WIth healthy lifestyle and onging skin care or non-surgical maintenance at periodic intervals, you should not require these surigcal procedures ever be redone.

Can I combine my facelift and neck lift with other procedures?

Due to its name, many patients have a serious misconception about just what a facelift can do. Despite the name, a facelift doesn’t address the entire face. Facelifts work on the areas of the face from below the eyes down through the jaw and upper neck. A neck lift extends the procedure down the entire neck.

Facelifts do not address sagging on the brows or aging in the eyes. That’s because those areas are controlled by different muscle groups than the mid to lower face. To achieve more extensive facial rejuvenation, many of our patients opt to include either eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and/or a brow lift with their facelift. These are natural complements to a facelift, and they provide rejuvenation to the eyes and forehead areas.

The use of dermal fillers and Botox can complement a facelift, as well.

If you’re interested in combining procedures into a single surgical session, discuss this with Dr. Fugo during your consultation. He’ll tell you which procedures make sense in combination and which may not.
