Breast Reduction for Men

Gynecomastia Surgery in New Windsor, NY

What is gynecomastia? Gynecomastia is a condition in which there is an enlargement of the male breast tissue, resulting in a soft, often feminine appearance of the chest. While this condition is not widely discussed, it is extremely common. Do you struggle with poor self-esteem due to gynecomastia? Tired of hiding your chest beneath compression shirts or baggy clothes? Rest assured, if you suffer from gynecomastia, you have treatment options. Dr. Fugo can treat your condition with a male breast reduction procedure in New York.

Are There Non Surgical Male Breast Reduction Options?

If your breast enlargement is due strictly to the accumulation of fat, losing weight and reaching your ideal weight will reduce your breasts. However, fat pockets in the breasts can be stubborn and resist your efforts.

If your enlarged breasts are due to true gynecomastia, you will not be able to remove the enlarged glandular tissue behind your areolae without surgery. Still, as described throughout this page, these are not difficult surgeries, so there’s no reason to avoid having Dr. Fugo address your gynecomastia.

Reasons to Consider Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia, or the appearance of male breasts, is a problem that affects many men. It typically results from an imbalance of the hormone estrogen, but it has also been linked to several other factors, including obesity, fitness supplements and recreational drug use. Gynecomastia can be present in one or both breasts and can develop at any age—from puberty to adulthood. Although gynecomastia typically poses no health risks, it can be embarrassing, having a negative influence on one’s self-confidence.

Too often, men will attempt to cover up or hide their condition because they are unaware of possible treatments. Male breast reduction provides a real and effective solution to gynecomastia, achieving a taut and more masculine appearance of the chest.

Your Male Breast Reduction Consultation

During your consultation visit with Dr. Fugo, he will carefully discuss and analyze your condition, work to determine the cause and then discuss which male breast reduction treatment option will work best for you. Your male breast reduction usually involves only liposuction, although a combination of excision and liposuction procedures may be recommended, depending on your specific condition and the cause of your gynecomastia.

How long does male breast reduction surgery take?

These are not difficult surgeries. For most male breast reduction procedures, Dr. Fugo needs between 1.5 and 2 hours.

How do I prepare for Male Breast Reduction surgery?

Although relatively minor, this is still surgery, so you’ll need to make the same preparations as you would with any surgery. You’ll stop taking blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin, and most supplements for one week prior to your procedure with Dr. Fugo. If you smoke, you’ll need to stop for two weeks prior to and following your surgery, as smoking constricts the blood vessels and can impede healing.

If your job involves moderate to heavy lifting, you’ll need to be excused from this for about six weeks during your recovery, so those arrangements should be made beforehand.

How Dr. Fugo will Perform Your Male Breast Reduction

Your procedure will be performed under general anesthesia. To begin, Dr. Fugo uses custom 3mm cannulas (thin, hollow tubes) which require only tiny incisions at sites remote from the breast, so that no surgery is ever suspected. The cannula is connected to a specialized surgical vacuum, carefully inserted through the incision and the target area of breast tissue is removed. The cannula is expertly maneuvered to break-up and extract the stubborn breast tissue, while contouring and smoothing the surrounding chest wall. Once removed, this breast tissue is gone for good. When your desired chest shape is achieved, Dr. Fugo will close your incisions and place the necessary dressings.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery and Results

Immediately following your gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Fugo will place you into a compression shirt which is worn for a short period of time to aid in maintaining your desired chest contour. This garment is designed to ensure proper healing of the skin and tissue. Discomfort is normal for the first few days following your surgery, but is well managed with medications prescribed by Dr. Fugo.

You will notice dramatic, positive changes in your appearance as soon as your surgery is complete. However, expect some minor initial bruising and temporary moderate swelling. Within several weeks, the bruising and soreness dissipates. It is important to remain patient and positive during the recovery process as it may take a few months to appreciate the final results of your male breast reduction procedure. As you heal, your resulting appearance will continue to improve, leaving a more natural, masculine chest contour. Post-operative scarring is nearly imperceptible.

Depending on the demands of your work and lifestyle, most patients return to work within several days. It may be two to three weeks before you can return to all normal activities without restrictions. Before you know it, you are ready to enjoy your new, masculine look and maintain long-lasting results which can be further enhanced with exercise and weight lifting.

Is recovery after male breast reduction painful?

These are not overly painful recoveries by any means. The incisions made by Dr. Fugo are small if he uses only liposuction to downsize your breasts. Removing glandular tissue and any excess skin will create longer incisions. Regardless, patients find the recovery discomfort easily manageable with the use of prescription pain medication (usually only for the first one or two days) and then switching to over-the-counter pain medication options.

What to expect from your scaring following Gynecomastia surgery

Dr. Fugo uses tiny incisions to introduce the cannula to suction away your fat around your enlarged breasts. These incisions are usually made around the areolae, and they are basically invisible just a few weeks after your surgery. If you need to have the more involved surgery to remove the glandular mass, along with some excess skin, there will be some scarring. It also is relatively minimal. Our patients from across the New York area feel the minor scarring is well worth the change in the contours of their chest.

How long can I expect my recovery to take after male breast reduction?

As mentioned above, your initial recovery with its swelling can last for a week, maybe two. From there, you can resume your normal activities, but you’ll have to avoid strenuous exercise and any lifting of much weight for a few weeks.

How soon after breast reduction surgery can I get back to normal activities?

It is unfortunate that more men who suffer from enlarged breasts don’t have surgery to correct the problem. After the first week or two at most, patients can return to light exercise, such as walking. Strenuous exercise needs to wait for a month or so. But you’ll quickly be able to return to work and regular activities.

When you can return to excersise

Normal activities can be resumed in about one week, and this includes exercise. As you would probably assume, any exercise that specifically targets or involves the chest will need to wait for 4 to 6 weeks or so. Dr. Fugo will discuss these time frames with you.

Will my gynecomastia return after surgery?

In most cases of reduction surgery, where Dr. Fugo removes a majority of the breast gland, this also removes the chances of the condition returning.

However, if the gynecomastia was due to the use of steroids, marijuana, or other medications, it is possible for a patient’s breasts to become enlarged again if usage is continued. Also, a sizable increase in weight can allow fat to accumulate in the breasts, although this isn’t true gynecomastia.
