Liposuction, Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Many men and women are self-conscious of their midsection. Whether it because of fat accumulation, a protruding belly, or loose and sagging skin—a less than perfect midsection can cause individuals to feel dissatisfied and uncomfortable with their figure or physique. As such, Dr. Fugo’s New Windsor patients are relieved to know that there are options available to them.
Liposuction and Tummy tuck are two of Dr. Fugo’s most popular tummy toning procedures. While both are means to a fitter and flatter you, tummy tuck surgery and liposuction achieve results in very different ways.
Liposuction
By removing excess fat deposits through the use of very small incisions, hollow tubes and surgical vacuum, liposuction targets specific problem areas to slim the midline. While “liposuction alone can remove nearly all unwanted fat, your skin will not always inherently contract and tighten.”
Tummy Tuck
The more significant of the two, tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and tightens muscle laxity. Dr. Fugo explains that a tummy tuck addresses two primary concerns:
- “Excess skin with little inherent elasticity”
- “Underlying laxity of the abdominal wall musculature”
A “tummy tuck alone addresses excess skin of the lower abdomen as well as abdominal wall muscle laxity, neither of which will go away on their own”. This allows for the flattest stomach possible. Dr. Fugo believes that the “real ‘magic’ of a tummy tuck operation is that it restores the abdominal wall tone and contour” that can stretch and separate due to weight gain and pregnancy.
Keep in mind, when performed alone, tummy tuck surgery is not primarily about fat removal. Instead, it is about restoring the underlying structure as well as addressing any excess, stretched skin. Excess skin often must be surgically removed. Thus, a combination approach is sometimes the best. Together, liposuction and a tummy tuck can effectively contour and define the abdomen and waistline.
Choosing Between Liposuction & Tummy Tuck Surgery
It is best to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Fugo, to find out if a tummy tuck or liposuction is the right choice for you. Together, you and Dr. Fugo can determine which of these procedures will best achieve your desired results.
