As a very personal and intimate part of the body, many women shy away from openly discussing labiaplasty. At Dr. Fugo Plastic Surgery, we understand and appreciate that the labia is private. Little talked about, many myths and misinformation about labiaplasty persist. Here, we discuss labiaplasty in hopes of dispelling some of these common misgivings and, in the process, hope to help you feel more comfortable and confident as you make your decision about your labiaplasty procedure.

Myth: Labiaplasty is purely cosmetic

More often than not, women are motivated by practical rather than aesthetic reasons. An enlarged labia can dramatically interfere with a woman’s ability to live a normal life and can cause a woman to experience pain and discomfort.

For some, exercise proves uncomfortable and can hinder a woman’s ability to take part in exercises such as running, yoga, or bicycling. Intercourse can also be painful as it can lead to chafing, tearing, rashes, and bleeding.

Beyond the physical and functional reasons, labiaplasty often improves a woman’s self-esteem and enables them to be more self-confident in their body.

Myth: Labiaplasty is very painful

Dealing with such a sensitive area, many women are surprised to learn that labiaplasty is generally not considered to be especially painful. As to be expected, any surgical procedure may involve some discomfort. Any soreness can be controlled and treated with a simple pain medication.

Myth: Labiaplasty results do not last

The results of labiaplasty are permanent. As to be expected, the appearance may change slightly due over time, but you should not be in need of further surgery. Better yet, even pregnancy and vaginal birth will not alter the results.

Myth: Labiaplasty will interfere with sexual stimulation

Concerned that they will experience less feeling or sexual stimulation following labiaplasty, many women are hesitant to undergo this procedure. No need to worry—you can rest assure that labiaplasty does not alter sexual stimulation. The nerve endings that are most important for sexual sensation are located elsewhere and are not affected during your procedure. Therefore, once you have fully healed, labiaplasty will not interfere with sexual activity, your ability to achieve orgasm, nor your ability to get pregnant.

Our supportive and knowledgeable team looks forward to working with you. Please contact us today if you have further questions about labiaplasty or would like to schedule a discreet consultation with Dr. Fugo.
