Liposuction
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that last year alone, well over 200,000 men and women underwent liposuction. Always a patient favorite, Dr. Fugo is not at all surprised by this statistic, “liposuction is one of the most popular procedures at my New Windsor practice,” he says. Are you interested in liposuction as well? If so, you are bound to have a lot of questions.
Here, Dr. Fugo shares three pieces of advice for those considering liposuction.
Find a Qualified Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that You Feel Comfortable With
“Be certain that your surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS),” emphasizes Dr. Fugo. He explains that this “ensures that your surgeon is specialty trained in plastic surgery by an accredited training program in the US.” Why is board certification by the ABPS so imperative? Dr. Fugo says it best, “Your results and your safety depend on it! Unfortunately, liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures offered by physicians who have no formal training in plastic surgery. There are a tremendous number of ‘imposters’ that advertise themselves as trained and qualified to perform this and other cosmetic surgical procedures. These physicians always overpromise and under deliver. Worse yet, should you have a complication or poor result, there is typically very little they can offer to address their mistakes.”
It is important that you feel comfortable with your plastic surgeon. You need to “be open and direct regarding your concerns and aesthetic goals”—a task that is far more difficult if you are not completely comfortable with your surgeon. “An experienced surgeon will take the time to understand your expectations and be happy to provide you with the necessary information, enabling you to make a well-informed decision regarding your options” says Dr. Fugo.
Stick to What Works
There is a reason that traditional liposuction has long outlasted many of the new technologies that have recently come into practice. As Dr. Fugo is quick to point out, “Why is it still around? Because it works!” New treatments, like laser or energy assisted liposuction are “too often just hype, fads—they come into the scene and fade just as quickly.” Why, you ask? “Because they don’t do what they’re touted to do and worse can cause permanent adverse scarring and tissue damage. These complications are extremely difficult and sometimes impossible to correct” explains Dr. Fugo. “Unfortunately I see far too many patients who seek me out after they’ve suffered cosmetic surgery complications in the hands of an unqualified physician. Sadly, in some of these circumstances, there is little I can do to correct the deformities.”
Understand What You are Getting Yourself Into.
For liposuction to be successful, it must be tailored to address your specific concerns. Thus, the surgery itself “varies substantially as every individual has different needs.” Depending on the amount of liposuction needed, “the procedure takes anywhere from one to three hours, depending upon your specific anatomy and goals.” Performed as an outpatient procedure—Dr. Fugo clarifies, “you are able to go home shortly following your surgery.”
Allowing your body time to recover is also important to the success of your procedure. “Generally, for the average person, I recommend about three days off from work to recover,” advises Dr. Fugo. As for working out, “You’ll need to plan ten days away from the gym.” After about three weeks, Dr. Fugo says that “you can resume your normal activities.”
“I look forward to working with you to achieve the shape you’re in search of!”
As you go about your decision process, make sure to seek out the advice of a board certified surgeon. Serving the entire Hudson Valley area, Dr. Fugo looks forward to meeting with you. Please contact Dr. Fugo Plastic Surgery to schedule your personal consultation.
